Antenatal and Postnatal Care:
Antenatal care is provided by the practice doctors and District Midwife.
Upon receiving a mother’s discharge letter from the hospital, the practice will send out an invitation letter for you to attend a postnatal appointment, and six week baby check with your usual GP for antenatal care.
Please ensure that the red FP58 registration form is given to the practice at least (7) days before your appointment.
These are advised for women aged (25 – 65) in order to identify cell changes which could possibly lead to cancer of the cervix. A recall (by post) scheme is administered by the local Primary Care Trust and is based on current recommendations for women without previous abnormalities.
The recommendations are:-
Every three years from age 25 - 49 and every five years from age 50 – 64
Please book an appointment with the practice nurse. You should not be bleeding at the time of the test so please phone when your period starts to make an appointment for two weeks later. Results will be sent to you within six weeks.
Advice on the current recommended schedule is available from the Health Visitor, practice nurse or GP. Notification when the immunisations are due will be posted to the parents.
Please book an appointment with the nurse for Tuesday between 09.30 - 12.00pm. Immunisations should not be undertaken within 24hours of a fever or if the child is generally unwell. A minor cold or cough (without fever) is generally acceptable.
Referrals can be made to the practice Counsellor, with your agreement, by the practice doctors or nurse Practitioner.
You will need to complete a form and the Counsellor will contact you to book an appointment on Friday afternoon between 1.00 – 5.00pm.
Annual diabetes checks are undertaken with our specialist nurse trained in diabetes care on Friday afternoon between 11.30-6.00pm. If considered necessary, a follow–up appointment will be arranged with one of our doctors. It is recommended that HbA1C and, other blood tests, are taken by the practice at a minimum of six monthly intervals.
Contraception ( Family Planning ) and Emergency Contraception:
Please book with the nurse for all contraceptive injections. For IUD (coil) fittings you can self-refer to the local family planning clinics. Emergency contraception pills can be prescribed up to 72 hours after unprotected intercourse, but are more effective within the first 24 hours. You can also buy these pills over the counter at your local pharmacy.
Flu and Pneumococcal Vaccinations:
Influenza vaccination is recommended every year (in autumn) for patients aged 65 and over in addition to those within at-risk groups specified by the Department of Health.
Specific clinics are set up each year and eligible patients are actively encouraged to make an appointment but please ask your GP or nurse if you are unsure.
Family carers (registered with the practice) will also be offered this vaccination service.
We are unable to give flu vaccines to those patients outside the at-risk groups due to limited vaccine supplies. However, on certain occasions, based on current guidelines and related demand, surplus vaccines may become available and offered to all patients outside the at-risk groups at the discretion of the Partners.
Please ask reception/Nurse for details of alternative retail pharmacies who can offer this vaccination service, for which there will be a charge.
Pneumococcal vaccines are offered to those 65 and over in the at-risk groups.
We can treat adults and children for most of the common, less serious types of injury. We are happy to see you at the practice with any of the following;
- Sprains and strains
- Cuts and grazes
- Bites and stings
- Infected wounds
- Minor head injuries
- Eye problems – such as minor eye infections, scratches or if something is stuck in your eye
- Minor burns and scalds
We provide these services during our standard opening hours.
Lung Function Testing: ( Spirometry )
Patients with COPD are invited to book a yearly check of their lung function with our specialist nurse. Current and previous smokers who have smoked on average (20) cigarettes a day for at least 20 years are also encouraged to book for lung function testing to identify smoking-related lung damage.
We encourage all smokers to QUIT for the sake of their long term health. For help call the NHS Stop Smoking Helpline on 0800 1690 169 or book an appointment with the practice Smoking Cessation Advisor.
